Reddit has sued Anthropic for allegedly scrapping millions of user comments to train its AI Chatbot, Cloud without consent. The lawsuit focuses on a violation of user conditions, not copyright violations. A complaint filed at California Superior Court in San Francisco on Wednesday alleged that in violation of the terms of the Reddit service, Anthropic used automatic bot to collect redit material without permission.

According to Reddit, AI Startup was “deliberately trained on the individual data of Reddit users, who ever requested their consent.” The lawsuit also claims that Anthropic ignored several requests to stop and refused to sign a licensing agreement, even accessed Reddit’s site more than 100,000 times.

“AI companies should not be allowed to scrape information and content without clear boundaries, how they can use that data,” said Ben Lee, Chief Legislative Officer of Reddit, said. He said licensing agreements provide better protection for users, including the right to remove materials and safety measures against spam.

Reddit, which now has more than 100 million daily users, has signed licensing deals with other major technical companies such as Google and Openai. These deals not only helped Reddit protect their content, but also promoted the company’s financial position before the start of its stock market last year.

Anthropic, established in 2021 by former Openai authorities, is one of Openai’s biggest contestants. Its cloud chatbot is supported by tech veterans such as Amazon and Google Parent Alphabet, and is used in products such as Amazon’s Alexon.

In response to the trial, Anthropic said, “We disagree with the claims of Redit and will strictly protect ourselves.”

While many AI companies have trained their models using publicly available online content, Reddit argues that anthropic has crossed a line by refusing to respect the user rules and continue data for profit. The lawsuit suggests that Claude himself has been trained on “at least some reddit data” and did not know whether the material was removed or not.

Reddit also criticized the public image of anthropic as AI “White Night”, saying that the company “refuses to respect the railing of Reddit” and instead “instead enriched itself to the tune of ten billions of dollars using a licensed user material.

Interestingly, the case does not accuse the anthropic of copyright violations – unlike other recent cases associated with the AI model. Instead, the case of reddit focuses on a violation of service and inappropriate competition terms.

The lawsuit from the court asks anthropic for prohibition to prevent a prohibitory order to prevent the use of redit data, as well as with restoration and punitive damage. The case has been registered as Reddit Inc V Anthropic PBC with Case Number CGC-25-524892.
