Actor Rajkummar Rao shared his views on the criticism of cinema for glorifying problematic behaviour of male leads. He talked about Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal and Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas.

Rao said, “Did I have any issues with the film? Maybe. There were a few scenes here and there, yes. But did I not like the film? Not at all, I liked the film, I enjoyed the experience of watching the film. I loved Ranbir Kapoor in it and his acting in the film was amazing.” Quoting a film critic, the actor said the film was titled ‘Animal’ and not ‘Adarsh Purush’, which means it is being criticised for its portrayal of toxic masculinity.

While Vishal Bharadwaj ‘both hated and enjoyed’ it, actor-lyricist Swanand Kirkire criticised it for depicting themes such as sexual abuse, over-the-top toxic masculinity, domestic abuse and excessive violence and gore.
Rajkummar Rao also spoke about Shah Rukh Khan’s character Devdas and shared his views on the criticism of cinema for glorifying the problematic behaviour of male leads.
Rajkummar Rao said, “If you want to become Devdas after watching this, then the problem is in you. You are shown a story that there can be someone like Devdas. The filmmaker is not asking anyone to become like him, and it is based on a book… it is the story of a character. At the end he dies. He is telling you that if you do this, you will die early. He is not telling you that he is facing all this, he is still living well and he has a lot of money.”
Devdas It is the story of a narcissistic lover who sets out on the path of self-destruction after getting his girlfriend Paro (Aishwarya Rai) married to an older man. The film also stars Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in pivotal roles.
