In short

  • India has reduced Rabies’ death by 75% in recent years
  • About 5,700 people still die annually due to rabies in India
  • Every year there are cases of cutting about 9 million animals in the country.

Director of ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE), Dr. According to Manoj Murekar, India has registered a decrease of 75% in rabies -related deaths.

The central government has set a target of ending the deaths of rabies completely by 2030, as part of its comprehensive public health strategy.

“We need to ensure that dogs are vaccinated. Only human vaccines will not be enough. We also have data about how many animals bite, but we also need data on how many rabies deaths in dogs are,” Dr. Murekar quoted an ICMR study published in the Lancet last year as saying.

Despite the progress, around 5,700 people still die from rabies in India every year, making it one of the leading countries of the world, which are deadly of rabies.

The study has also shown that about 9 million animals cutting cases in the country are annual, two-thirds of which are associated with dog bites, the primary cause of rabies transmission.

To bridge the existing gaps in prevention and care, Dr. Murekhar emphasized the need to improve the availability of life-saving remedies across the country.

“Rabies vaccine is currently available in 80% of health facilities. The target is to take it up to 100%. It is necessary to provide monoclonal antibodies, and preformed antibody vaccines in class 3 bite cases are particularly important,” he explained.

Monoclonal antibody vaccines are a type of immunoglobulin that uses laboratory-made proteins that act as natural antibodies to fight specific viruses.

Unlike regular vaccines that train your body to make antibodies, they give you prepared protection. They are fast acting and are useful in emergency or for people with weak immune systems who cannot react well to traditional vacancies.

The availability of such vaccines in peripheral health facilities was limited, while they were accessible in medical colleges, they now need to be made available everywhere.

The government is also focusing on a ‘health’ approach, which recognizes mutual relations between human, animal and environmental health.

“We need to improve monitoring animals. The goal is to provide rabies vaccine in all hospitals across the country,” Dr. Muhekar said.

The 22-year-old state-level kabaddi player died weeks after a puppy cut off from Brijesh Solanki, Brijesh Solanki.

When Solanki, a resident of Farana village, was cut by a puppy, while it was saved from the drain, he became careless and did not find anti-opposing infection.

Dr. Murekar said that the aim of the government is to ensure the availability of rabies vaccines in every nationwide nationwide.
