Anupade Roy became the first Indian to win the Best Director Award at the Venice International Film Festival.

Anuparna Roy, a filmmaker from Purulia, West Bengal, has made India proud by winning the Best Director Award at the Origeti Section at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. His first feature film, ‘Songs of Folotot Trees’, earned him the prestigious honor, making him the first Indian director to receive the award.

Anuparna’s educational journey began in Narayanpur village, where he studied at Narayanpur Primary School and later in Ranipur Colliery High School. He completed his higher secondary education at NAOPARA High School and graduated from Kulli College with English honors. Anuparna later followed her master’s mass communication in Delhi.

Before becoming a filmmaker, Anupahna worked in an IT company in Delhi. However, after going to Mumbai Post-Covid, he re-discovered his passion for films and started writing the screenplay. His first film, “Run to River,” was shot in Purulia, and “Songs of Fortgotton Trees” marked his success in the film industry.

The songs of the song ‘Songs’ narrates the story of two migrant women in Mumbai, who discover the themes of loneliness, struggle and calm resistance. The film was the only Indian entry in the Orhizonti section and received significant praise. Anuparna’s victory is seen as a milestone for Indian cinema, and his success has proud of his family, clan and the entire kingdom.

Anuparna’s parents, Brahminand Roy and Manisha Roy expressed pride and happiness on hearing the news. His father, a production manager of Eastern Coalfields Limited, said, “We live in a general middle class family. I never thought that my daughter would win the best director award in Venice one day.”

Her mother said, “When she comes home, I will cook everything that she likes. After receiving such a great honor, a smile on her face is the biggest reward for us. I wanted him to be a government employee. I was very convinced of her that I was sure that she was sure that she would definitely get government jobs but she took more pride.”

Anupadar’s success serves as an inspiration for his younger sister and many ambitious filmmakers. His journey from a small village in Purulia to the prestigious Venice Film Festival is a will for his hard work and dedication. As the people of his village eagerly wait for his return to celebrate his achievement, Anuparna’s future projects are highly anticipated.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banjave congratulated Anuparna on her achievement on her official X handle. He wrote, “I am receiving an extraordinary international award from the news of our Purulia girl Anupan Roy. I congratulate her, her parents and all her friends and colleagues. Anupura has received the honor of the best director in her category at the world-famous Venice Film Festival, which can be practically called the victory of the world in cinema.”

“Before any Indian director has received this honor in this category. His parents live in Kulti, which is with roots in Junglemahal region in Rangamati.

The 82nd Venice Film Festival ended on a high note as the American Indy ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ took Golden Lion home for the best film.

Director Beni Safi’s actor Dwayne Johnson led ‘The Smashing Machine’ won Silver Lion for Best Director.
