Punjab ’95 is a biographical film based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh KhalraThe CBFC had initially proposed 120 cuts to the film, and it is uncertain whether it will be released in its original form.
The activist’s wife Paramjit Kaur Khalra had criticized the censor board’s demand for cuts and insisted that the biopic was made with the consent of the family and should be released without any changes. He revealed that his family had reviewed the script four years ago and given director Honey Trehan the approval to go ahead with the project, which featured Dosanjh as Khalra.
The Khalra family also watched the film in 2022 and expressed satisfaction over the portrayal of the activist’s fight for human rights during a tumultuous period in Punjab’s history. Jaswant Singh Khalra is remembered for exposing the extrajudicial killings of Sikh youth by the Punjab Police during terrorism in the late 1990s. Tragically, Khalra was kidnapped in 1995 and later murdered. Six Punjab police officers were later convicted of her kidnapping and murder.
