SS Rajamouli’s epic film, Varanasi has been in the news for Prithviraj Sukumaran’s portrayal of the primary antagonist, Kumbha. Kumbha, wheelchair-bound and visually impaired, presented an unusual creative challenge to the actor.

In a recent interview with Collider, Prithviraj talked about his character of Kumbha. He said, “As an actor, especially after working so much in the industry, you work almost subconsciously, always knowing that your body is available as a communication tool. Then you’re put into a situation where nothing from the neck down is visible, and you realize that nothing you do physically will be visible. Everything you have is focused on your face. Everything you have to express has to come through your face and eyes. Should,” he explained.

Prithviraj further added, “None of Kumbha’s emotions are one-dimensional. Everything he does and says carries so much weight from his past, with layers of subtext beneath every line. That complexity is what makes the character so compelling to me, and that’s what really excites me as an actor.” He suggested that the layered writing elevates Kumbha far above a traditional antagonist.

The actor also praised Rajamouli’s subtle filmmaking approach. He said, “I have been fortunate to work with a director who is very clear and focused on how each character should look on screen. It is a blessing for an actor to have such a clutter-free creative environment.”

Summarizing the experience, Prithviraj said, “I am really looking forward to watching the film and seeing more of the character of Kumbha, as it is one of the most complex characters I have played. Certainly one of the most complex characters imagined by Rajamouli sir.”
