Pope Francis, who was hospitalized last week, developed pneumonia in both its lungs, Vatican said on Tuesday that the 88 -year -old was in “good souls”.
Vatican said in a statement, “Laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and the clinical position of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture”.
Francis was admitted to Jameli Hospital in Rome last Friday for bronchitis, but Vatican said on Monday that it was changing his treatment after trials.
It stated on Tuesday that a “polymicrobial infection” that comes on top of “bronchiectasis and asthma bronchitis, and which requires the use of cortisone antibiotic therapy, makes medical treatment more complex”.
“The follow -up chest CT scan, which the holy father passed through this afternoon … demonstrated the onset of bilateral pneumonia, which required additional drug therapy,” said this.
Pontiff cut part of his right lungs when he was 21 years old, after developing pleuris who almost killed him.
The Vatican had already canceled a Pope audience on Saturday and said that he would not participate in a month on Sunday, although it has not announced plans for its weekly Angelus prayer held on Sunday yet.
“Nevertheless, Pope Francis is in good souls,” said this.
The Vatican said that the Pope took rest with prayers and lessons in the hospital on his fifth day.
Pilgrims pray
Since 2013, Francis, head of the Catholic Church, was publicly admitted to the hospital after struggling for several days to read his texts.
It is the latest of a series of health issues for Jesuit, which has undergone hernia and colon surgery since 2021 and uses wheelchairs due to its knee pain.
On Tuesday, many of the pilgrims and tourists gathered at St. Peter Square said they were praying for the recovery of the Pope.
“I hope he is getting better soon,” 48 -year -old Austrian tourist Birgit Junguthuthmeyer told AFP.
Others gathered outside Jamelli Hospital, holding candles or saying prayers.
“I came to say a prayer to the Pope so that he could recover soon. I send him my best wishes”, Jacqueline Tronxo, a Bolivian resident of Rome, said.
The Vatican published paintings made by the children at the hospital for Francis, as well as the letters of the parents asked them to pray for their sick children.
Francis “thanks what he feels at this time and asks with a grateful heart, that we continue to pray for him”, said this.
Active schedule
Despite his health problems, Francis remains a very active Ponten, with a busy weekly program and regular exotic trips.
In September 2024, he completed a four-nation Asia-Pacific tour, which was the longest of his sinner from the period and distance.
A source within the Pope’s entry said on Monday that Francis was “very busy” admitted after two weeks, during which “he had weakened” – but insisted that there was no alarm.
Francis followed the hospital on television last Sunday and sent a written address to Angelus.
Francis wrote, “I like to live among you, but as you know, I am here in Jameli Hospital because I still need some treatment for my bronchitis.”
Jesuit has left the option to resign if he was unable to fulfill his duties.
His predecessor, Benedict XVI, in 2013, surprised the world by becoming the first Pope after the Middle Ages, citing his sick health.
But in a memoir published last year, Francis wrote that “I did not have enough serious reason to think about resigning”.
Stepping down is a “distant probability” that would only be appropriate in the event of “a serious physical barrier”, he wrote.
In an autobiography published last month, he said that despite his diseases, “I move forward”.
“The reality is, it is quite easy, that I am old,” he said.
