Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited the famous Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque during his two-day visit to Brunei. The purpose of his visit to Brunei is to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi visited the mosque, which is considered one of the most iconic structures in the region. The visit took place soon after the inauguration of the new office of the Indian High Commission.

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei – the father of the current Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah – and is considered the architect of modern Brunei.

Prime Minister Modi also interacted with local officials, scholars and members of the Indian community who had gathered in large numbers.

The new chancery of the Indian High Commission in Brunei was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi, which was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian community. The new facility is built at the Jalan Duta Diplomatic Enclave, adjacent to the US Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval were also present on the occasion when the Prime Minister lit the lamp and unveiled a plaque.

After the inauguration, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that “The Chancery complex reflects the profound spirit of Indianness, skillfully integrating traditional motifs and lush plantings. Beautiful cladding and use of durable Kota stones further enhance its aesthetic appeal, with a harmonious blend of classic and contemporary elements. The design not only pays tribute to the rich cultural heritage of India but also creates a serene and inviting atmosphere.”

Prime Minister Modi arrived at Bandar Seri Begawan airport on Tuesday afternoon. He began his two-day visit to Brunei Darussalam. This is the first bilateral visit of an Indian Prime Minister to this South-East Asian country. This visit is taking place at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

This historic visit of the Prime Minister is taking place on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.
