Prime Minister Narendra Modi met industry leaders from semiconductors to electronics and biotechnology on the second day of his three-day US visit to discuss India’s potential and opportunities.
Participants in the CEO roundtable included Shantanu Narayen, President and CEO of Adobe; Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google; Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM; Lisa Su, President and CEO of AMD; Noubar Afeyan, Chairman of Moderna.
With the CEOs of leading US-based companies, Prime Minister Modi discussed fostering greater cooperation between the two countries in cutting-edge areas of AI, quantum computing, semiconductors and biotechnology.
During the India-US bilateral meeting on Saturday, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised joint efforts to facilitate resilient, secure, and sustainable semiconductor supply chains, including the construction of the GF Kolkata Power Center in Kolkata, India by GlobalFoundries (GF), which will enhance mutually beneficial ties in research and development in chip manufacturing.
According to a joint fact sheet released by the White House, the leaders welcomed new private sector collaborations on emerging technologies, such as IBM’s recent MoU signed with the Government of India that will enable IBM’s WatsonX platform on India’s Airavat supercomputer and foster new AI innovation opportunities, enhance R&D collaboration on advanced semiconductor processors, and increase support for India’s National Quantum Mission.
The two leaders welcomed the progress made since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in November 2023 between the Department of Commerce and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to enhance the innovation ecosystem of the two countries under the “Innovation Handshake” agenda.
Since then, the two sides have held two industry roundtables in the US and India to bring together startups, private equity and venture capital firms, corporate investment departments, and government officials to establish relationships and accelerate investments in innovation.
In New York, Prime Minister Modi also addressed a huge gathering of the Indian community on Sunday, which had gathered in thousands from different parts of the country.
On the first day, Saturday, Prime Minister Modi attended the fourth Quad Leaders Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by US President Joe Biden. Following the US side’s request to host the Quad Summit this year, India has agreed to host the next Quad Summit in 2025. The forum has emerged as a key grouping of like-minded countries working for peace, progress and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
On the third day, Monday, Prime Minister Modi will address the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York before leaving for India. The theme of the summit is ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’.
A large number of global leaders are expected to attend the summit. During the summit, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders and discuss issues of mutual interest.
