Toxic is Yash’s first release after the blockbuster success of the KGF franchise, which catapulted him to the national stage. The film retains his established mass-hero persona with shades of his KGF character Rocky, which is a plus.
The two promos released so far offer a cocktail of stylized violence and bold erotic imagery. It’s been a long time since a big film has done this, but as far as openings go, it’s doing well, especially in smaller centres. While this may limit its appeal to a family audience, it shouldn’t be an issue for the opening day.
The film will be released on Eid. It’s a big holiday that benefits everywhere, but Muslim centers are especially busy, and the film is going to perform strongly there.
With all these advantages, there is a negative and a big one. A toxic confrontation with the biggest Hindi film of recent times, Dhurandhar: The Revenge.
Dhurandhar: The Revenge will be the first choice for exhibitors and visitors on the day, and Toxic is likely to suffer a performance loss. While this clash will certainly increase awareness of Toxic, the awareness may not fully translate into box office numbers without adequate exposure.
It remains to be seen whether the film sticks to this date or not, but as of today, the chances of a clash are high. With a single release or a clash with a lesser film than Dhurandhar: The Revenge, on a major holiday, the film could have grossed Rs. Earning Rs 20 crore or more on the first day, but in the current scenario, it is more likely to be around half of that.
