Pew survey finds 59% of US voters want immigrants to get US citizenship
In the US presidential election to be held in November, immigration and the deportation of illegal immigrants is one of the major issues for voters. A Pew Research survey shows that 59% of American voters want immigrants to be granted US citizenship. However, the number of people demanding the deportation of illegal immigrants has increased.

In November, Americans will decide whether the next US president will be Donald Trump or Joe Biden. Votes will be cast not just on individual candidates but also on key issues facing the American people and the promises the two candidates make to address them. A new survey from the Pew Research Center reveals how American Biden and Trump voters view key issues, including immigration.
The survey shows that 59% of American voters want immigrants to be granted US citizenship. However, the number of those demanding deportation of illegal immigrants has also increased. This number has now increased from 26% to 37% since 2021.
Whereas Biden promises to grant citizenship to spouses of US citizensTrump has promised “The Largest Deportation Campaign in US History”.
This is a reflection of the main debates in the US elections — immigration, deportation of illegal immigrants and accepting people who do not speak the same language. Recently, the Pew Research Center conducted a survey and asked Americans about their “immigration attitudes.”
Immigration attitudes: A controversial issue in US elections
Voters who supported Joe Biden and other voters who supported Donald Trump have displayed different views on the issue of immigration.
It’s part of a reflection of longstanding differences between Republican and Democrat voters, and more recent ones along the U.S.-Mexico border.
They also differ on the larger issue of whether America’s openness to immigrants from around the world is a core part of its national identity, and on how open Americans are to people who speak languages other than English.
According to the Pew survey, nearly six in 10 registered voters, or 59%, want undocumented immigrants to have a chance at becoming US citizens. Of the 59%, 36% believe immigrants should be allowed to apply for citizenship. Another 22% believe they should also be allowed to apply for permanent residency.
Nearly four in 10 voters (41%) believe undocumented immigrants should not be allowed to stay in the country. More than 37% of these voters believe undocumented immigrants should be deported.
Deportation from America: Trump voters vs. Biden voters
Deportation is also a widely debated issue in the US. Six in 10 Trump supporters (63%) believe these immigrants should be deported from the US; only 11% of Biden voters believe the same.
85% of Biden supporters believe immigrants should not be deported. 56% believe doing so should force immigrants to apply for citizenship.
Only 32% of Trump supporters believe immigrants should have legal status and 15% say it should be a way for them to obtain citizenship.
Although many Americans believe immigrants should stay in the US, that number has dropped since 2020. Previously, 74% said immigrants should stay in the US.
Among Republican voters, about 66% believe immigrants should not live in the U.S. This is an increase from 54% in April 2021 and 42% in 2020.
More people want immigrants deported now
Concerns about immigrants taking away resources from American citizens are growing and this is also reflected in the number of people who favor deporting them. This number has increased from 26% to 37% in 2021.
63% of Republican voters believe illegal immigrants should be deported. This is up from 49% in 2021.
Among Trump voters, Hispanics (who make up 46% of total Trump voters) say immigrants should be allowed to stay in the US.
Another factor that divides Biden and Trump voters is their attitude toward hearing “other languages in public places.” About 69% of Trump supporters under the age of 50 are comfortable hearing languages other than English in their community.
Among Biden supporters, 92% of those 50 years of age or younger and 76% of those 50 years of age or older feel comfortable listening to languages other than English.
