Ishaan Khatter has been in the news recently after making his Hollywood debut. In his six-year career, the actor has had the opportunity to play many different roles. In a recent conversation with the Indian Express, he said that he still gets typecast because of his young face. The 28-year-old actor also revealed if this makes him feel bitter.
Khatter made his debut at the age of 21 and says that for a long time, the most common feedback he got was that, “I look too young. For better or worse, we don’t write very complex and layered roles for young faces and young actors here.” Khatter, who made his debut with Dhadak, calls himself fortunate to have worked in films by the likes of Maji Majidi (Beyond the Clouds) and Mira Nair (A Suitable Boy).
When asked if this makes him feel bitter, Ishaan said that if that is what he wanted. In his case, he went for it and was a bit spoiled after starting off with rare roles like Beyond the Clouds. “I just wanted to get out of the box a little bit. Even in commercial projects, getting three dimensional roles, bringing in those layers and dimensions is largely an actor’s job, but being supported by the text is also very important,” Ishaan expressed.

Ishaan Khatter, in the same interview, emphasised that he is not focused on making a name for himself in just one industry. He doesn’t call himself someone who strategises too much but is just lucky to have found work that adds value to his filmography. “I have always tried to diversify my work, I have never been obsessed with making a name for myself in a particular industry,” he said, adding that when someone asks him if he wants to work more in the West, he simply says ‘wherever there is good work’.
In the recently released The Perfect Couple, Ishaan played Shooter Divel, the best friend of Billy Howle’s on-screen character. This six-episode Netflix series is an adaptation of a book by Elin Hilderbrand and is directed by Susanne Bier, while Jenna Lamia is its showrunner and writer.
