"People who abused …": Amit Shah on Tahwur Rana’s Extraditon

Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that the extradition of Tahwur Rana, accused in the 26/11 terror attacks, is the “big success” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomacy.

He also made an excavation in the Congress, which was called without any name, “The governments under which the bombings were exploded could not bring them back”.

Rana has been accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, where innocent people were killed, and expected to stand for a trial in India.

“It is the responsibility of the Government of India to bring back all those who have abused the people of land and India under the law of the country. Tahwur Rana’s return is a major success of Modi government’s diplomacy, because the governments that made bombs cannot bring them back.”

On 7 April, the Supreme Court of the United States dismissed Tahwur Rana’s plea to remain its extradition in India. Rana filed an emergency application on March 20, 2025 with Chief Justice Roberts, demanding a migration on his extradition.

The SC order said on Monday, 7 April, “The application and court referred to the Chief Justice to address and the court.”

According to the Mumbai Crime Branch, a case of criminal conspiracy against Rana was originally recorded by the NIA in Delhi after the November 2008 attacks in which more than 160 people were killed.

The ongoing extradition process is related to that case. However, the officials clarified that it was yet to be determined whether the Mumbai Police may seek their custody for any local investigation involving the attacks.

“After examining the basis of extradition only, it will be clear whether custody can be sought by the Mumbai Crime Branch in the case,” sources said.

Sources said that the Mumbai Police has not received any formal communication so far regarding the transfer of Rana in the city for questioning or judicial action.

Tavavur Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian citizen, was convicted for the operators of Lashkar-e-Tabiba (Late) banned in the US and provided material assistance to the group responsible for Mumbai attacks killing more than 174 people.
