The most dangerous reality show that tests people’s survival skills in real scenarios is back with a second season. The first six episodes of Outlast Season 2 will premiere on September 4, and the final two installments will release on Netflix on September 11, as revealed exclusively by Entertainment Weekly.
Sixteen contestants will be dropped into the Alaskan wilderness, where they must survive in extreme conditions such as freezing temperatures with no food and minimal supplies. The show allows people to play dirty by ruining the comfort of other contestants and forcing them to leave – which they can do by lighting a flare in the sky.
Last season, one of the four teams that competed to last longer than the others hit its lowest point and risked the lives of its opponents by stealing their sleeping bags, forcing them to reluctantly forfeit the game rather than risk hypothermia by sleeping outside in freezing temperatures.
Two female contestants vandalized a player’s shelter and destroyed his raft. The nefarious activities continued with the theft of a sleeping bag and she also harassed her former team by destroying their tarpaulin.
Grant Kahler, the show’s executive producer, told EW, “It was definitely shocking.” He also revealed that the incident caused the production team to intervene and separate people because they were “so angry and so upset.” Kahler added that for safety, they had to slow down and “re-assess what was happening.”
The second season trailer confirmed that betrayal is the spirit of the game, and contestants will take all measures to win the million-dollar prize. A voice in the trailer says, “Let’s ruin their whole camp.” Contestants were heard discussing the unfair nature of the game, saying “Sometimes you have to be the bad guy” and “That’s the game – if you weren’t ready, it’s not our fault.”
Show creator Mike O’Dair told EW that they have tried to retain every element that viewers loved in the first season. He said, “This new cycle features bigger stakes, even more daring team dynamics, and stories that really capture the human spirit within this intense and cold game of ultimate survival.”
