Kiran Rao returned to the director’s chair and brought the comedy-drama film Lapata Ladies. Even though the film was released last year, it is still receiving great love from fans and critics. The film was selected as India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. But the filmmakers became emotional when it failed to make the shortlist for the Academy Awards this year.
Lapata Ladies was screened at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 and even won the Best Film (Critics’ Choice) award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. So, when it was selected as the Indian entry for the Best International Feature Film for the 97th Academy Awards, everyone’s expectations were high. But sadly, the film was not nominated, leaving many people including Kiran Rao heartbroken.
So, on December 18, the film’s official Instagram handle dropped a long note informing fans that the film did not make it to the Academy Awards this year. Soon after, Kiran re-shared the post on her Instagram handle along with an emotional emoji along with a red heart and folded hands emoticons.

In an emotional note left by the official social media handle of Lapata Ladies, the team expressed their disappointment at not making it to the Academy Awards. However, they were extremely grateful for the incredible support and trust they have received throughout this journey.
A part of his note reads, “We express our gratitude to the Academy members and the FFI jury for considering our film. It is an honor to be included in this prestigious process with some of the best films from around the world. Our heartfelt thanks to all the audiences around the world who have expressed their love and support for our film.
Lastly, the team congratulates all the top 15 shortlisted films and wishes them all the best for the next phase of the awards. While The Missing Ladies was not successful, Shahana Goswami’s Hindi-language film Santosh was shortlisted for the Oscars as the United Kingdom’s entry in the Documentary Short Film category.
