O’Romo received an A rating; CBFC muted words, removed gory scenes: Report

The Central Board of Film Certification has given an ‘A’ certificate to Shahid Kapoor’s film O’Romeo after the filmmakers made several edits. This included dialogue replacements and cutting of violent scenes.

Shahid Kapoor’s new film hey romeo It is set for release after being awarded an ‘A’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, it is Kapoor’s fourth collaboration with the director and his second consecutive film to receive an adult-only rating after Kabir Singh.

Certification was granted on 11 February, reportedly after mandatory changes and cuts.

Suggested changes and dialogue changes

according to a Bollywood Hungama According to reports, the makers of the film needed to amend several dialogues and scenes before the censor board cleared it. The word ‘item’ was reportedly replaced with ‘Kumari’. According to the report, a word was muted in some scenes and an ‘inappropriate’ word was removed.

These changes were implemented to comply with certification guidelines. The board did not ask for any cuts in romantic or intimate scenes.

Reduction in violence and graphic content

Particular attention was paid to the film’s violent content. A close-up shot of the throat slit was reportedly reduced by 20%, amounting to three seconds of footage. Reports suggest additional cuts include two seconds each of a gory scene, including a blow to the head and a shot showing a woman bleeding from her face.

Additional edits and final certificate details

According to the report, other edits included reducing the duration of a scene in which a woman is slapped. Anti-tobacco and anti-smoking tickers were also added, along with disclaimers and the duration of the accompanying voice-over increased to approximately two minutes.

After these adjustments, Hey Romeo! According to the portal, it was officially certified with a runtime of 178.41 minutes or just under three hours. The certificate was granted on 11 February, clearing the way for the film’s scheduled theatrical release.

The cast includes Shahid Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwari, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani, Farida Jalal, Vikrant Massey and Trupti Dimri.

Legal dispute over characterization

Meanwhile, the film had earlier faced legal scrutiny due to objections from Hussain Ustara’s family, who claimed that the character was based on their late family member.

The family further alleged that Ustara was seen as a “loose cannon” by criminal gangs and that he was murdered by associates of Dawood Ibrahim.

The filmmakers and legal representatives say the film is a work of fiction.
