Opinion: Decoding Singham Again’s Ramayana Connection and Its Impact Ahead of Diwali

The release of Singham Again, the latest installment of Rohit Shetty’s cop universe, is now very close. The trailer, which was unveiled earlier, was filled with various references to Ramayana. It certainly managed to generate a lot of curiosity among the audience. In this piece, let’s decode the Ramayana connection in the Ajay Devgan starrer and see how it could impact its release this Diwali.

Just like Lord Ram did for Mother Sita in Ramayana, Ajay Devgan will make every possible effort to save Kareena Kapoor’s Avni in the film Singham. Arjun Kapoor’s villain is inspired by Ravana. Tiger Shroff, who plays Satya, is shown worshiping Singham like Lakshman did to Ram. Ranveer Singh is seen as Lord Hanuman, while Akshay Kumar is seen as Garuda.

I feel that the references to Ramayana are not just superficial, but an important part of the story, as Ajay’s character must follow the clues given in the Hindu epic to save his wife. Apart from scenes like Ajay finding Kareena’s jewelery and Ranveer touching her feet, references are also used in the lyrics and music.

The song Jai Bajrangbali features various scenes inspired by Lord Hanuman’s devotion to Ram. These have been used in a very detailed manner. For example, there is a shot of Ranveer Singh sitting on a coiled rope, just like Hanuman is sitting on his coiled tail.

In my opinion, if the mythological angle is used skillfully in the film, it can have a positive impact and attract audiences to the theatres. The film is releasing in theaters on the auspicious occasion of Diwali 2024 and there couldn’t be a better time for people to connect with the story.

However, in recent times Ramayana has been a reference point for many Bollywood films. So it is also possible that people may feel that it has been overused. But if justified well and engagingly, I think the film could stand out even more.

Do you think using the mythological aspect could be beneficial for Singham Again or not? Let us know in the comments below.
