The year 2024 has been full of ups and downs for Bollywood and film lovers. Lately, we have seen some notable content-driven films get their due, while some big ventures have flopped at the box office despite advanced marketing strategies. So, how much of an impact does marketing actually have on a movie’s revenue?
With changing times there has been a lot of stress and the focus has shifted towards film promotion. Trends like method dressing, leaked BTS footage, conversation clips and influencer marketing on social media were not much in vogue; However, it is interesting to see how dedicated a special team has been to the film business in this section recently.
Well, marketing a product is undoubtedly just as important as reaching a wide range of audiences. For example, Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar’s The Lady Killer could not reach the audience due to lack of promotion and failed at the box office. A lot of hard work goes into the filmmaking process and no one goes into the market to make losses.
Thus, as important as marketing is, strong content is even more important. In my opinion, promotional assets like teasers, trailers, and music that give a broad glimpse of the world with the film’s characters are the best marketing. These assets help the film reach a wider audience, but if the content does not appeal to the audience, it will not benefit at a later stage.
Now many of you may also say that the makers cleverly cut an entertaining trailer, thereby obscuring the exact picture of the film in many cases, but still these films can attract the audience on the first day, But ultimately, it will be qualitative content that will help. The film remained a box-office hit in its next few days.
Of course, being a film-lover, I strongly believe that powerful content is followed by positive buzz. Nothing can be more authentic and reliable than these two dimensions. Sometimes, unfortunately, some films may get their due value late, but it will definitely pay off. Vikrant Massey’s 12th Fail and Kiran Rao’s Lapata Ladies are great examples of this, and I couldn’t be happier to see deserving talent getting immense recognition.
