OpenAI working on AI earbuds? Maybe but the latest rumors are fake

Is OpenAI working on earbuds that will be powered by ChatGOT? We don’t know for sure yet. Rumors suggest the company is working on earbuds codenamed Dime, but OpenAI’s president calls the latest rumors “bogus.”

Sweet Pea–expected OpenAI device

Is OpenAI preparing to launch earbuds? Leaked information from China suggests that the company is working on earbuds codenamed Dime and they will be powered by ChatGPT. This seems plausible since OpenAI is actually working on consumer hardware that will be powered by its AI systems. So why the question mark? A few days after the latest rumors spread, the OpenAI president called the speculations “bogus.”

“Fake news,” said Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, responding to a post on X.

Earlier, a tipster, who goes by the name Smart Pikachu on social media, had given some information about OpenAI’s upcoming gadget. In an X post, Pikachu claimed that OpenAI recently filed a hardware patent with China’s patent office. Due to China’s new IP rules for large US AI companies, this filing has now become public, suggesting that the product may be coming out soon. According to Pikachu, the product is codenamed Dime and it is rumored that it could be released by the end of this year.
Only problem? Brockman dismissed the reports outright. Interestingly, after his comment, Pikachu deleted the ex-post. The Reddit account “winheda”, which originally shared the information on Reddit ahead of X’s visit, has also now been deleted.

Leaks about the devices that OpenAI is working on are nothing new. Earlier, we heard that the device is codenamed Sweetpea and that it is a pair of earbuds powered by ChatGPT.

Possibly the dime is fake but there is something

It’s possible that the recently leaked Dime details are fake. But the other side of the story is that OpenAI is actually working on an AI-powered consumer device, which it hopes to replace the smartphone with. Instead, the goal is to create a screen-less device that users will be able to access and use through voice commands.

Last year OpenAI and Jony Ive, the famous iPhone and Apple designer who now works independently, formed a partnership to create a device of the future. We don’t have too many details yet about what this device will look like and how it will work. But we know that our goal is to create a device that will not have a screen.

Over the past few months, talk has intensified about a physical device powered by ChatGPT. In fact, rumors suggest that OpenAI and Ive are exploring different form factors and ideas when it comes to this device, and there is a possibility that OpenAI could create not just one device but multiple gadgets that would use AI at its core. One of these gadgets is said to be earbuds, although these will not be like AirPods or Sony XM5. These will be more powerful, with more functional chipsets and will do much more than what you can currently do with earbuds.
