OpenAI updates its ChatGPT images for better and faster performance: here’s what’s new
According to OpenAI, the revised image generator offers dramatically better instruction-following, far more precise editing tools, and image creation speeds that are four times faster than before.

If your AI-generated images took a little longer to render, or came back with mysterious changes you definitely didn’t ask for, OpenAI thinks it has a solution. The company has announced a major update to ChatGPT Images that promises to make visual creation faster, faster, and far better than following instructions. In short: fewer surprises, more control, and a lot less waiting. The update, revealed in a blog post on Tuesday, is part of a broader effort inside OpenAI to transform ChatGPT from an impressive novelty to a truly practical everyday tool. And this time, the company says, the improvements aren’t subtle.
According to OpenAI, the revised image generator offers dramatically better instruction-following, far more precise editing tools, and image creation speeds that are four times faster than before. It argues that this combination fundamentally changes what users can realistically do with AI-generated scenes.
“The update includes more robust instruction adherence, highly accurate editing, and up to 4x faster generation speed, making image creation and iteration even more useful,” the company wrote. “This innovation marks a shift from image creation to practical, high-fidelity visual creation, transforming ChatGPT into a fast, flexible creative studio for everyday editing, expressive transformations and real-world use.”
From ‘AI surprises’ to precise editing
The biggest disappointment with older versions of ChatGPT images was their tendency to go overboard. Ask for a small change, and the system can quietly rework half the image. OpenAI says the problem has been the main focus of this update.
The company claims the new version is much better at making targeted changes without altering other elements, allowing users to refine images rather than starting from scratch again and again. For designers, marketers, and casual creators, this can mean easier workflow and much less trial and error.
Speed is the other title change. With generation times now reportedly four times faster, OpenAI is establishing ChatGPT images as something you can iterate on in real time rather than a tool that impedes creative momentum.
The timing of the update is no coincidence. This comes just weeks after OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman reportedly issued a “code red” memo inside the company, calling for immediate improvements to the overall quality of ChatGPIT.
In that internal document, Altman said OpenAI still has significant work to do to improve the day-to-day experience of chatbots, including answering a broader range of questions and boosting speed, reliability, and personalization. The memo was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
‘Code Red’ as competition increases
This urgency reflects increasing pressure from rivals. Competitors are closing the gap on OpenAI’s early lead, with Google last month releasing a new version of its Gemini model that outperformed OpenAI in several industry benchmark tests.
To sharpen his focus, Altman said OpenAI will delay or reduce work on other initiatives, including a personal assistant called Pulse, advertising projects and AI agents for health and shopping, according to the Journal. He also reportedly told employees that there would be daily calls between the teams responsible for improving ChatGPT.
“Our focus now is on making ChatGPT even more efficient, continuing to grow, and expanding its reach around the world, while also making it feel even more intuitive and personal,” Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, wrote on Monday night.
Behind the scenes, financial realities are also shaping OpenAI’s strategy. Unlike rivals like Google, which can control AI development through existing revenue streams, OpenAI is not yet profitable and is dependent on continued fundraising to maintain its operations, the Journal reports.
It brings improvements like ChatGPT images updates more than just technical upgrades. They’re part of a broader effort to make ChatGPIT indispensable, faster, more reliable, and more useful, at a time when the race to AI continues to accelerate.
For users, however, the path is simpler: creating and editing AI images should now feel less like wrestling with a machine and more like collaborating with one.
