Openai has started testing local pricing for CHATGPT in India, allowing users to pay for the first time in Indian rupees. It is part of a pilot program and makes India one of the few countries where the company offers an option that is included in markets such as UK and parts of Europe. according to a Moneycontrol Report, this step is aimed at making payment simplified and more accessible, which is more accessible to Indian customers of CHATGPT, which is important that India is one of Openai’s largest and fastest growing user bases.

As part of the pilot, the price of the Chatgpt Plus plan is Rs 1,999 per month, including GST, while the high-end Pro plan is priced at Rs 19,900 per month. Business using the team scheme will pay Rs 2,099 per seat per month. So far, Indian users had to pay in US dollars, ie $ 20 (about Rs 1,750) for plus, $ 200 (about Rs 17,500), and $ 30 (about Rs 2,600) per seat for team plan.

This rollout comes just after the release of the latest and most advanced model of GPT-5, Openai. GPT-5 provides better performance in 12 Indian languages, making it more relevant to the local market. There is also a discussion about a more budget -friendly plan called Chatpta Go, it is reportedly priced at Rs 399 per month, which can target casual users or students.

Interestingly, local pricing was one of the major demands made for OpenIE CEO Sam Altman during his visit to India in February 2025. However, Openai is not alone in chasing Indian users. Rivals such as Google and Perplexity are also aggressively expanding. Perplexity Bharti Airtel’s 360 million customers are providing one year membership of one year for their premium tier (typically Rs 17,000 annually), while Google is providing college students in India a year free access to their AI equipment.
