Onam 2024: 13 best places to enjoy traditional Onasadya in Chennai

It’s that time of the year again. Chennai’s love for Onam lunch started long before other metros in India. It would be fair to say that the city’s traditional Onasadya is probably the best option outside of Kerala. The sadya, a traditional, elaborate banana leaf meal is the highlight of festivals like Onam and Vishu and weddings in Kerala. The dishes on your leaf are served from left to right. The top half of the leaf is reserved for accompaniments and the bottom half for main and main dishes, as is the case with most South Indian banana leaf meals.

While it is almost always vegetarian, there are parts of Kerala like Kannur where it is not uncommon to find sadyas that include meat and seafood as well. This is not just limited to takeaways, a trend we saw in Chennai in the 2020s is the takeaway sadya or sadya in a box. This is not a new trend, in most cities in Kerala it is common for households to ‘outsource’ their sadya from traditional wedding cooks or caterers. Many of these sadyas have over 20 dishes and it is becoming increasingly difficult for housewives in small urban kitchens to cook a full sadya at once.

From puli inji to sweet chakra upperi like Kerala chips – a savoury type coated with subtle spices and a mix of jaggery and thoran (stir-fried vegetables), sadya offers a wide range of accompaniments. Most sadyas in Chennai will include kalan, olan, vegetable stew, erucherry, kootu curry (a mixture of vegetables and Bengal gram), soft Kerala pappadam, pachadi and khichdi. Rice is the only main course and is served first with dal and ghee followed by sambhar, rasam and thick buttermilk at the end of the meal. Almost all sadyas traditionally serve Kerala-style boiled rice. The highlight of the sadya is the payasam.
