It is not easy to deal with questions asked by children about their mother: Karan Johar
Filmmaker Karan Johar recently opened up about the struggles of being a single parent. Karan became a parent to twins Yash and Roohi via surrogacy in 2017.

Filmmaker Karan Johar is worried about his son Yash’s excessive sugar intake and gaining more weight than is healthy according to his BMI. In a recent interview, Karan shared that Yash’s weight gain is turning him into the kind of parent he doesn’t want to be. He recalled an incident when he inadvertently fat-shamed his son during a vacation. The film director, who is a single parent, is also facing questions from his kids about their mother.
“It breaks my heart when I see my son eating sugar and gaining weight… I am very worried about it. I don’t want to tell him because this is the age when I want him to enjoy life. I want him to be happy and carefree because he is a happy child. But I can see genetics… I can’t blame it, I got it from my mother and I know he got it from me,” Karan said on The Faye D’Souza Show.
Karan revealed that his concern about Yash’s health has turned him into a parent he didn’t want to be. “I encourage him to play sports, play football, play cricket, do all the things that I didn’t do, and then I think to myself, ‘I shouldn’t be this kind of parent. This is not who I wanted to be. I want my child to be his own person on his own terms. I really struggle not to say insensitive things to my kids,” the filmmaker said.

Once during a vacation, Karan told his son, “Yash, you have gained weight.” Soon after saying this, the ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’ director felt “deeply sorry”.
“I went to my room and said, ‘Why did you do this?’ Then I went out, hugged her and said, ‘I’m really sorry, please eat whatever you want’,” Karan said.
Karan Johar, who became a father via surrogacy in 2017, is now realising how challenging parenting can be. Apart from Yash’s weight gain, he is also dealing with questions from Yash and Roohi about their mother.
Karan said, “I am also grappling with questions like, ‘In whose womb was I born? Mumma is not Mumma, she is my Dadi.'” He said that they are trying to handle the situation with the help of the school counsellor. Karan concluded, “Being a parent is never easy. In my case, I am an only child and a single father.”
Karan is raising his children along with his 81-year-old mother, filmmaker Hiroo Johar.
