Now what is whipped sunscreen?

Whipped sunscreens (also known as mousse sunscreens) have taken the world by storm, especially in the Western world, thanks primarily to their fun application experience.

After lotions, sprays, gels, powders, and sticks, a new sunscreen formulation is on the block, and it’s quite unexpected. The moment you take it out of the container, this product sits on your skin like freshly whipped cream. You’ll want to mix it into your frappe right away. It looks so tempting. But remember, it’s a sunscreen, not a cupcake topping!

Whipped sunscreen has taken the world by storm, especially in the West. This can be mainly attributed to its fun application experience. Miami-based ‘sun-care’ brand Vacation launched its whipped sunscreen formula almost two years ago, and it went viral this summer. Social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram and even X (formerly Twitter) are flooded with videos of people trying out this exciting product. Apparently, even Kim Kardashian is a fan.

Not just Vacation, many international brands have their own versions of whipped sunscreen. Supergoop and AV are among them. India too has its own whipped sunscreen. Delhi-based brand Grass launched its first product this year called Play Dirty – India’s first whipped sunscreen.

Is whipped sunscreen also effective?

Dr Kiran, Delhi-based dermatologist and founder of Isya Aesthetics Clinic in New Delhi, explains, “Whipped sunscreen or mousse sunscreen is basically a sunscreen that contains a propellant (a gas-like substance that is kept under pressure in a can or bottle and when the pressure is reduced, the contents are released) and a dissolving agent, which gives it a whipped, foamy texture.” india today,

The main difference is the texture. Otherwise, like other sunscreens, these should contain broad-spectrum UV filters.

Whipped sunscreens are popular for their light-as-air weight, quick absorption into the skin, and non-greasy formula.

What makes whipped sunscreen different?

Dr. Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant, Dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram says, “Whipped sunscreen spreads easily and absorbs into the skin more quickly than traditional sunscreens, which can sometimes feel oily or heavy. This type of sunscreen is preferred for being non-sticky and easy to reapply, making it a practical option for regular sun protection.”

Many people also praise these mousse sunscreens because they work wonders when applied under makeup, providing a smooth base.

One element stands out in many of the videos of people using whipped sunscreen: excitement. This excitement can motivate people to reach for their sunscreen bottle, apply it, and even reapply it.

Gaurav Virmani, CEO and Founder of Grass, said india today They found that the market was lacking a sunscreen that was not only effective but also enjoyable to use.

Virmani says, “Traditional sunscreens often felt heavy or sticky, making them difficult to use regularly. We wanted to change this by introducing a product that makes sun protection an enjoyable experience. The concept of a whipped sunscreen with a lightweight and luxurious texture seemed like a great way to bring innovation and fun to daily skincare in India.”

According to some experts, this is a win-win situation, as it promotes the idea of sun protection. Even children can benefit from this attractive formula and eventually make it a habit to include sunscreen in their daily routine.

Dermatologists worried

However, there are some concerns about whipped sunscreens, particularly the presence of propellants. Propellants are the reason many dermatologists don’t recommend using spray sunscreens – because those propellants shouldn’t be inhaled.

“If you use whipped sunscreens, be aware that they often contain a lot of chemicals to create the whipped texture. Ingredients such as PVP and certain propellants are commonly used. These propellants, like those found in hairspray, can be aerosolized and inhaled into your lungs,” Dr Kiran said.

Although these chemicals are generally considered safe when used in small amounts, they can pose a health risk if directly inhaled. To minimize exposure, these sunscreens should be applied in a well-ventilated area.

It is important to read the label and choose a sunscreen accordingly. Different brands use different propellants for whipped sunscreens, so it is better to evaluate the risks and overall benefits, or consult a dermatologist for advice.

“A major benefit of using whipped sunscreen is that it is enjoyable. It improves the user experience by making sunscreen application more enjoyable. This may promote more frequent use, especially for people who find applying regular sunscreen difficult or inconvenient,” says Dr. Passi. But as Dr. Kiran points out, “the whipped texture does not improve the efficacy of sunblock in any form or manner.”

So, do you need it?

A good sunscreen is effective only if it provides broad-spectrum UV protection (it should contain ingredients that protect against both UVA and UVB rays), is PA+++, SPF 30 (or higher), non-comedogenic, and is suitable for your skin type.

As far as whipped sunscreens go, they can certainly look fun and Insta-worthy, but that’s it! There’s no more reason to ditch a regular good sunscreen for a whipped one. Oh, and remember not to put it on your cupcakes or that tall glass of frappe.
