New eye drops could eliminate reading glasses. Learn about presbyopia
India’s drug regulatory agency has approved new eye drops to help people with presbyopia avoid the need for reading glasses, a condition that affects more than a billion people worldwide.
India’s drug regulatory agency has approved new eye drops that can help people suffering from presbyopia (sight impairment) do away with their reading glasses.
Known as Presvu and manufactured by Mumbai-based Entode Pharmaceuticals, these new eye drops will be available in pharmacies from October and will be sold through prescription for Rs 350.
These eye drops received the final approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) after the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) had already recommended the product.
According to the manufacturers, PresVu is the first eye drop in India designed to reduce the need for reading glasses in people suffering from presbyopia (a common vision problem that affects people over the age of 40).
Even if we are growing without regional stages, we have to start growing according to every data.
What is presbyopia?
Presbyopia is an age-related condition in which the lens of the eye gradually loses its ability to focus on near objects.
This occurs because the lens becomes less flexible over time, making it harder for the eye to adjust its focus when moving from distant to near objects.
Typically, presbyopia begins to affect people in their 40s or 50s. Common symptoms include difficulty reading small print, the need to hold reading material farther away, and eye strain when working up close.
People with presbyopia usually need reading glasses to see near objects clearly, especially when reading or doing detailed work.
Presbyopia affects 1.09 billion to 1.80 billion people worldwide. In India, about 45% of adults over the age of 40 have presbyopia and require glasses for reading.
New eye drops to remove reading glasses
The new eye drops PresVu is a non-invasive procedure to treat presbyopia.
It has a unique formulation to address blurry vision that occurs with age. The proprietary formula not only eliminates the need for reading glasses but also provides the added benefit of lubricating the eyes.
The eye drops use an advanced dynamic buffer technology, which allows them to quickly adapt to the pH value of tears, ensuring continued efficacy and safety for long-term use. The pH of tears is typically around 7.45, but it can range from 7.14 to 7.82.
Since these drops can be used for years, this feature makes them especially affordable and accessible.
In 2022, a similar formulation was introduced in the US under the brand name Vuiti after receiving approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). Vuiti is currently the only FDA-approved eye drop designed to treat age-related blurred vision.
