Netflix might start offering content for free, but you’ll have to put up with ads too
Netflix is reportedly planning to launch a free, ad-supported tier in select markets. So, users will be able to watch Netflix for free. This new tier may primarily target audiences in Europe and Asia. It is currently unknown whether it will come to India or not. Here’s everything to know.

Netflix is reportedly planning to introduce a free, ad-supported tier in select markets, which is a significant shift in its business strategy. So, users will be able to watch Netflix for free. Sources familiar with the company’s plans told Bloomberg that this new tier may primarily target audiences in Europe and Asia. It is currently unknown whether it will come to India or not. But since the company has not yet introduced any free plan with ads, there is a possibility that it may come to this country as well. If it comes to India, users will not need to spend money to get access to Netflix content and will be able to watch anything on Netflix for free with ads.
The report says Netflix is in the early stages of discussing this potential move. The company previously tested a free service in Kenya that offered a limited selection of content, though that initiative was later discontinued. The proposed free tier is expected to follow a similar model, providing a curated and restricted library, but with a focus on established markets such as Japan and Germany rather than emerging markets.
This potential change comes at a time when Netflix continues to move forward in the competitive landscape. In recent years, it has faced challenges from rivals such as Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max. To stay ahead, Netflix has implemented several changes, including strict measures against password sharing and several subscription price hikes. In 2022, the introduction of an ad-supported tier was another bold move to attract budget-conscious customers and increase advertising revenue.
Despite these efforts, Netflix’s subscriber growth has stalled in some mature markets. The discovery of a free ad-supported plan is likely to attract viewers who are hesitant to pay for a subscription, while additional revenue can be earned through ads. However, the company is reportedly not planning to launch this free option in the US, where its existing models are already fully saturated.
Although Netflix has not made any official announcement yet, this plan if launched is likely to attract a lot of people in India as it is free. There are platforms like Disney+ Hotstar and Zee5 that are offering content to users for free but at the cost of watching ads. It is worth noting that Netflix already offers plans at the lowest possible prices in India. It starts at Rs 149 for the basic mobile plan in India and goes up to Rs 649 for the premium monthly subscription.
