It seems that Netflix may increase the price of its select plans by the end of this year. According to a report by Slashdot, research firm Jefferies has claimed that Netflix may announce a price hike for its standard and ad-supported plans by Q4 or December 2024 for three reasons. It says that the price of Netflix’s standard plan was increased in January 2022, so now the time has come for the company to increase prices. It is also offering ad-supported plans at the lowest price compared to the industry. The company has also recently added live sports to its platform. The research firm says that these are the reasons why Netflix may announce a price hike by the end of 2024.

“Netflix last increased the price of the Standard plan in January 2022, its ad-supported plan remains the cheapest in the industry (among major players), and its move into live sports increases pricing power – for these 3 reasons we suspect a price increase on the Standard plan could come in the fourth quarter or December of this year,” Jefferies said.

This could be true as Netflix has only increased the prices of its Basic and Premium plans in October 2023. However, the research firm claims that Netflix may phase out the Basic plan as well. It further claims that the impact of the new plans will be the driver of average revenue per user (ARPU) for the year 2025.

Also, Netflix has previously stated (after announcing WWE Raw’s arrival in 2025) that it will ask its members to pay a little extra for the improvements (content) that will be made to the platform. So, this price hike news could be true, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet. It is currently unknown if the Indian market will also be affected by this hike.

The research firm said, “We believe Netflix is ​​positioning itself for a price hike later this year. There will be key content releases supporting a price hike including the Christmas NFL game in December/2025, Squid Game 2 on December 26 (Season 1 – the #1 watched NFLX show of all time), WWE RAW starting in January 2025, and Stranger Things 5 ​​(Seasons 3/4 in top 10 of all time) coming in 2025.”
