The 2024 NEET exam for admission to undergraduate medical courses in India has been mired in controversy due to incidents of paper leaks and inflated marks. The highest marks in the exam were scored by 67 students, many of whom were from the same exam centre. Protests broke out across the country with demands for the exam to be cancelled and even the National Testing Agency, which conducts the exam, to be abolished.

Amid allegations of unfairness and lack of integrity in the exam, the government has handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI and constituted a high-level panel to overhaul the NTA.

Congress MP faints in Rajya Sabha amid NEET protests, taken away on stretcher

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Phulo Devi Netam fainted in the Rajya Sabha on Friday during a protest by the opposition. The opposition protested against the government’s refusal to hold a discussion on the NEET exam. The MP was taken to a hospital after she fainted inside the House. However, the Rajya Sabha proceedings continued despite the incident, which was criticised by the opposition. The India Bloc accused the government of showing total indifference towards the member and walked out of the House in protest. Netam is a Congress Rajya Sabha member from Chhattisgarh. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, who met Netam at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, criticised the government for not respecting MPs. He said, “Talking about compassion with this government and this Parliament, especially the Rajya Sabha… there is no compassion for the people. They continued the House, they did not come to see what happened.”

Five Army jawans were killed after being swept away while crossing a river during a river crossing exercise near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Daulat Beg Oldie, Ladakh.
