As explained by consultant nutritionist Rupali Dutta, nutrition therapy is a scientific approach that uses food as a means to treat or manage specific diseases. She says, “Food is an important aspect that prevents the risk of developing lifestyle diseases. If you are already suffering from any disease, it can help prevent progression and other complications. Nutrition therapy is about how food plays an important role in controlling diseases or the risk of developing certain diseases.”
This concept is further elaborated by the Cleveland Clinic, which describes medical nutrition therapy (MNT) as a form of treatment that combines nutrition education and behavioral counseling to manage or prevent medical conditions. A registered dietitian collaborates with healthcare teams to identify the patient’s unique health needs and goals. Based on this, a personalized nutrition plan is created to maximize micro and macro nutrient intake, thereby optimizing overall health. The dietitian also assists in the implementation of this plan, ensuring that the patient can effectively integrate these changes into their daily life.

Who needs nutritional therapy?

Nutrition therapy is not limited to any particular person group; it is beneficial for all people who want to manage or prevent a variety of health conditions. Medical nutrition therapy is especially important for individuals struggling with chronic diseases.
