Like every year, National Cinema Day 2024 was a huge success, with almost 30 lakh tickets sold across languages and formats. Stree 2 was the biggest hit among the films as it grossed Rs 4.60 crore on its sixth Friday. Around 5 lakh people flocked to the theatres to watch the Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao starrer.

Stree 2 and Yudhra together sold 9 lakh tickets on National Cinema Day

Yudhra emerged as the second most favourite film among movie lovers. It was the biggest surprise on National Cinema Day as it earned Rs 4.25 crore. Around 4.5 lakh tickets were sold for this action-thriller. For the film to be a theatrical success, it should ideally match or better its first day numbers but based on spot bookings, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Tumbbad records highest viewership ever

Tumbbad is rocking its re-release. The film is getting a re-release that most films dream of. It earned Rs 2.60 crore on National Cinema Day Friday. The second Friday of the re-release is better than the first, in fact three times better than the opening Friday of the original release. Around 2.75 lakh cinegoers tuned in to watch the legendary horror in theatres and this is the highest single day viewership of the film. The film might match the first week collection of the re-release in the second week of the re-release.

Where it starts, where it ends, it punches above its weight

The non-starrer film ‘Kahan Shuru Kahan Khatam’ earned Rs 1 crore on the first day. This film is earning much more than its potential. Now it remains to be seen whether this film is able to double its first day earnings in its entire run or not.

The benefits of National Cinema Day transcend languages and ages

Among other releases, Marathi film Navara Maza Navasacha 2 made a strong presence, earning over ₹2 crore on its first day. Thalapathy Vijay’s The Goat sold nearly 2 lakh tickets on its third Friday combining all its versions. Punjabi films Gandhi 3, BB Rajni and Ardaas 3 sold over 1.1 lakh tickets together. Veer Zaara (re-release), Khel Khel Mein and Buckingham Murders grossed ₹75 lakh combined on National Cinema Day.

Indian audiences indicate that affordable pricing is the way forward

Hollywood films, other regional releases and holdover releases combined to ensure that 30 lakh moviegoers visited cinemas on National Cinema Day. India has once again spoken through its actions. It has proved that India is indeed a price sensitive country and affordability is the way forward.
