Tyla has added another award to her shelf! The singer won the Best Afrobeat award during this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, for none other than her viral track Water. The singer made sure to give a lasting acceptance speech.

Tyla expressed her gratitude, saying that this is a huge moment for “Africa, African music.” She added that the impact her popular song has had on a global scale is proof that “African music can also be pop music!”

The singer spoke about diverse African music, saying, “It’s very special, but at the same time it’s bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artistes under Afrobeat,” adding, “That’s a thing, and even though Afrobeats has opened a lot of doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s so much more than just Afrobeats.”

Tyla further added that she is from South Africa and represents her culture. She concluded her speech by thanking the Afrobeats musicians who were nominated in the category alongside her and said, “I love you guys.”

Meanwhile, Tyla recently released the music video of the latest track, Breathe Me, which takes a creative approach to showcasing the romantic connection between a couple. Set in Osaka, Japan, this music video follows on from the Truth or Dare music video.

The latest MV truthfully depicts the honest dynamics of a loving couple, including their respect and love for each other as well as moments of tension that are eventually resolved.

Tyla embraced casual fashion, but didn’t forget to make her mark in that department by wearing an oversized t-shirt and keeping her makeup to a minimum.

This track has the potential to become another club banger or go viral like her previous hit song. At such a young age, she has definitely made a name for herself in the Afrobeat genre.

As well as the VMA, she has also received a Grammy for Best African Music Performance and a BET Award for Best New Artist.
