Kanwaljit Singh, who portrays the role of Ashwin Kumar, a patriarchal father -in -law in Mrs. recently reflected on the inherent mentality of men in the society. Discussing the recurring patterns of male approaches, he shared that even after facing criticism, the change remains elusive. Mrs., starring Sanya Malhotra, premiered on ZEE5 on 7 February, 2025. The film, remake of The Great Indian Kitchen, follows Richa, a trained dancer, as she struggles with traditional expectations after marriage and eventually stands against protest.
Kanwaljit Singh shared his approach to the role in an interview with Mrs and Hindustan Times. He revealed that he deliberately refrained from looking at The Great Indian Kitchen to ensure that his portrayal remained original instead of being influenced by the Malayalam film.
Considering the topics of the story, he highlighted how patriarchal cycles remain, emphasizing that when encountered with harsh truth, the change remains elusive. He said, “The vicious circle moves forward. Our log Sudhreenge Nahi! (We are not going to change! Even if they throw dirt on us, we will not change for better)!
Kanwaljeet also said that his character behavior has arisen from generational conditioning. He said that the son mimics whatever he has seen in his father and grandfather, believes that it is ideal. According to him, shape the approach to the underlying symptoms in such a way, making individuals appropriate in their actions without justifying them.
Kanwaljit Singh shared that he was shocked by watching the film at his premiere, as he had forgotten the intensity of his character’s actions. He felt upset with his own portrayal, even called his character ruthless. Overwhelmed by influence, he spontaneously apologized to Sanya Malhotra, who found his response entertaining.
The Mrs. actor addressed criticism around the film, especially claimed that it promotes ‘toxic feminism’. He clarified that the film is not advocating an agenda, but is just holding a mirror for the society. He emphasized that the story reflects a deeply surrounded cycle of patriarchal conditioning, one should be broken instead of breaking.
