Motorola’s parent company Lenovo held a big event in China today, where it introduced the new Razr 50 foldable series, along with a ton of other tech.
This year’s Razer lineup consists of two phones – the flagship Razer 50 Ultra with a 4″ cover screen and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, and the affordable but still quite capable Razer 50 with the Dimensity 7300X.
Motorola Razr 50 Ultra
The Ultra’s main feature is a larger cover screen with thinner bezels than last year’s Razr 40 Ultra. This is the largest display of its kind on a foldable we’ve seen so far, and it’s pOLED with 1080p resolution, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, and support for HDR10+. It also supports a variable refresh rate of 1-165Hz refresh rate.
The large cover display has a lot of features we’ve already seen in other Razer devices – watching videos, getting navigation details, viewing yourself while taking selfies.
The foldable panel on the inside is a familiar 6.9″ FHD+ pOLED with an even better colour gamut – 120% DCI-P3. The refresh rate is again a variable 1-165Hz, the touch sample rate is 360Hz in select modes, and the peak brightness is 3000 nits. Behind the cutout is a selfie camera with a 32 MP sensor and a f/2.4 lens in front of it.
Speaking of cameras, one of the biggest improvements Motorola has made is in the dual-camera department – the entire setup has changed, and now features a 50 MP f/1.7 main shooter and a 50 MP f/2.0 telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom.
The presenters on stage talked a lot about the AI capabilities of the Razr 50 Ultra, as has every other company this year.
The battery is 4,000 mAh and has 45W fast charging as well as 15W wireless charging – both of which are upgrades from last year. The phone comes with Android 14 and Moto MyUX. The device is IPX8 water-resistant, a first for a Razr device, although the small print limits submersion time to a depth of 1.5 metres to just 10 seconds.
The Razr 50 Ultra is already available for sale in China in three Pantone options – Dill, Navy Blazer, and Peach Fuzz.
Pricing is CNY5,699 ($785/€730) for 12/256 GB and CNY6,199 ($850/€800) for 12/512 GB.
Motorola Razr 50
The vanilla version of the Razr 50 was also announced with a larger 3.6″ POLED cover display, different from the smaller 1.5″ rectangular screen in the Razr 40. The panel inside has the same specs as the Ultra – 6.9″ with Full HD+ resolution and 3000 nits peak brightness.
This model also features the 6000-series aluminum frame, 32 MP selfie shooter, and 50 MP main camera with OIS from its higher-grade sibling. Unfortunately, the second camera on the back is a 13 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide snapper with a 120-degree field of view – the same as the camera found on last year’s Razr 40.
The new chip Dimensity 7300X was introduced last month as a dedicated platform for dual-screen foldable devices, and as everyone expected, the Razr 50 is the first to use it. According to MediaTek, it comes with 4×2.5 GHz Cortex-A78 and 4×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 CPUs and Mali-G615 GPU with in-house HyperEngine for powerful graphics and great gaming.
The battery here is 4,200 mAh with 30W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. The Razr 50 also comes with Android 14 and Motorola’s user interface.
The Razr 50 comes in three Pantone colors — Steel Wool, Pumice Stone, and Arabesque — and all three feature vegan leather panels.
Pricing is CNY3,699 ($510/€475) for 8/256 GB and CNY3,999 ($550/€515) for 12/512 GB. Like its Ultra sibling, this phone is already on sale in China.
There was no mention of a global launch, but all of Motorola’s social channels around the world are teasing the reveal of these models today, so we expect to know more about it soon.
