Ralph Kograler, a resident of Surgeons Paradise, was raised loudly at 2 pm on Friday. Running at his window, he saw the roof of the hotel engulfed in flames.
“At least 10 different pieces scattered under the building under the building exploded, which seemed to be completely fire-it was incredible.”
He told how the burning debris landed in a restaurant in the lower levels of the hotel, coffee shop table and even an umbrella.
He said, “At its peak, the flames at many levels were so intense that we were afraid that we might have to be emptied.”
Melbourne Cup winning Jockey Shane Dye, who lives in a residence within one of the Hilton towers next to the burning building, said he was working in his lounge when he looked at the explosion.
“I’m only 30 meters away, and my window directly encounters the tower that caught fire,” dye told Racet. “Everything was in flames-I could not believe it.”
He said that confusion started.
“The man at the front desk did not know what was going on. Then suddenly, people ran in, shouting that the whole place was setting fire, the debris was falling, and we needed to get out.”
