In short

  • In India, users do about 500 million UPI transactions every day
  • Many times, users accidentally send money to the wrong UPI ID
  • You can raise dispute with your UPI app customer support to recover your money

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has changed the way Indians pay for payment. From shopping to bank-to-bank transfer, every day UPI payment apps hosted millions of transactions. However, while this is convenient, sometimes mistakes can be just with a tap-which prevents the heart of error: sending money to the wrong UPI ID. Whether it is a hasty transaction or a simple typo, sending money to the wrong UPI ID is more common, which can be more common than a expected.

If you find yourself in this position, do not panic. Here are some steps that you can do to fix and recover your money.

Try to contact the recipient directly

First and foremost, if possible, try to contact the recipient through the phone number connected to the UPI ID. Explain the situation and humbly request the refunds.

Contact Customer Support

The first few minutes before starting the transaction are important. As soon as you realize the mistake, report the problem through the UPI app you used – whether it is Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM. These platforms have an underlying assistance or aid section where you can raise a dispute.

Go to the history of your transaction, select incorrect transfer, and use the option ‘increase a dispute’ or ‘report a problem’ option. Enter your complaint by providing all transactions details including wrong UPI ID, transaction ID, transferred amount and date of payment.

Reach your bank

Along with using the UPI help section, you should also contact your bank’s customer service. Most banks have processes for disputes related to UPI. Inform the bank representative about wrong transactions and request them to start a reversal. Some banks may guide you to present a written complaint or visit the branch. The bank can then formally try to find out the funds and reverse.

Enter a complaint with NPCI

If the above options do not work, you can extend the matter to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI system. Go to the NPCI website and fill the online complaint form under the dispute redressal mechanism. You have to submit transaction details, your contact information and support evidence, such as bank statement.

Contact RBI Lokpal

If there is no resolution after a month, you can pursue the issue by filing a complaint with the Lokpal of the Reserve Bank of India for digital transactions. This official structure can help solve your case, especially if the transaction contains a large amount. You can file a complaint online through RBI’s Complaint Management System Portal.

How to avoid UPI errors

To avoid future troubles, keep in mind the following tips:
