Mona Singh on ageism in Bollywood: This happened when I was 30
Mona Singh shared her experience about ageism in the acting industry and how OTT platforms are changing the narrative. She discussed the challenges she faces in her 30s and the opportunities brought by digital mediums.

Ageism is a significant issue in many industries, but it is particularly challenging for female actors. As they age, good roles become less frequent, forcing them to take frequent breaks. However, with the emergence of OTT, this trend seems to be a thing of the past. ‘Munjya’ actress Mona Singh shared the same in a conversation with India Today.in, saying that she was worried only once, when she was 30.
Mona Singh told that when she took a break from television, she realized that nothing good was happening for her.this happened in the 30s (This happened in my 30s). There was a gap, because I was not doing TV because I wanted to challenge myself as an actor. I was then experimenting with theatre. That was the time when there was this lull, and it made me wonder ‘is this really happening to me? I am not getting roles because I am 34-35’,” the Kaala Paani actor said.
This phase didn’t last long as she said that the digital medium started in 2017 and she realised that she had to do a lot more. The actress further added, “The stories and even the way of storytelling has changed. It is much bolder and more creative. There are a lot of characters for me to play. Also, characters are no longer just black and white and you can play grey shades without being judged.”
The ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin’ star said that her priorities as an actor remain the same. She wants to play characters that push her boundaries as an actor and challenge her to do more. “I want to play a police officer, do action scenes. I am keen to do more and explore every genre. When it comes to choosing a project, the script should stun me and impress me. It should have an impact and make me spend sleepless nights worrying about how I will do it,” Mona said with a smile.
She also admitted that she rejected new projects instead of accepting them. “This is really important. I don’t want to take the burden of going on set and then being unhappy. That would be unfair not only to the filmmaker but to me as well,” the actress said.
Mona Singh will next be seen in Prime Video’s ‘Maa Ka Sam’.
