Tributes have poured in from around the world for MASH*, Klute and The Hunger Games star Donald Sutherland, who died in Miami on Thursday, June 20, at the age of 88, after a long illness.
During his six-decade-long acting career, Sutherland racked up over 200 film and TV credits and won an honorary Oscar. Following news of the star’s death, many celebrities and prominent figures took to the Internet to pay tribute to the actor.

Joe Biden, Michael Douglas, Helen Mirren and others pay tribute to Donald Sutherland
Joe Biden — President of the United States
President Joe Biden took to Twitter to honor Sutherland, describing him as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather and a unique actor who inspired and entertained the world for decades.”
Helen Mirren – Sutherland’s The Leisure Seeker co-star
Mirren remembered Sutherland in a statement as one of the most intelligent actors she has ever worked with. “He had an amazingly inquisitive mind and a great deal of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects,” she said, adding, “He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity and a seriousness about his profession as an actor.”
Mirren said all of this made Sutherland a “legend of the film world.” The 78-year-old actress said she will miss her colleague and friend’s presence in this world.
Jane Fonda – Sutherland’s Klute co-star
Fonda, who starred alongside Sutherland’s lead character John Klute in Klute, called the late star “a brilliant actor and a complex person” in her tribute on Instagram, adding that the two of them loved working together.
Edgar Wright – Filmmaker and actor
The 2017 Baby Driver director posted a tribute to Sutherland on X, praising his “funny, concise, but also intense presence” in a number of memorable films. The acclaimed filmmaker noted that the actor starred in two of his “very favorite and most influential films — Don’t Look Now and 1978’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” Edgar Wright ended his tribute to Sutherland by asking people to list their favorite Donald Sutherland movies. “Donald, so sad to see you go, but what a legacy you leave behind,” he said.
Ron Howard — film director
“I had the privilege of directing him in #Backdraft . One of the most intelligent, interesting and entertaining film actors of all time. Incredible range, creative courage and dedication to serving the story and the audience with supreme excellence,” Howard wrote on X.
Rob Lowe — Actor
Lowe remembered Sutherland in X and urged people to watch the actor in Ordinary People. He said, “It was an honour to work with him many years ago and I will never forget his charisma and ability.”
Matt Reeves – The Batman director
Reeves called Sutherland “one of the greatest players of all time” in his tribute post on X.
Mark Cousins — Film Producer
“Fortunate to have known great film actors. But the death of #DonaldSutherland hit hard. Intellectually brilliant, full of doubts about his own beauty, inquisitive. He loved to talk about books, sex, Fellini, Jane Fonda, politics. Dazzling,” Cousins wrote of Sutherland in simple terms.
Rachel Zegler — Actress
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes star expressed her sadness over Donald’s death by sharing a Variety post on her Instagram Stories, accompanied by a broken heart emoji.
Sutherland is survived by his wife, Francine Racette of 76 years, five children and five grandchildren.
