Meta is firing more than 100 employees from its reality labs division, which is another major change in its approach to the manufacture of virtual reality (VR) and wearable products. The move aims to cut overlable work within teams and reorganize internal functions for better efficiency, especially when the company continues to move forward in the report of competitive mixed reality space, Bloomberg.

This latest Downsizing mainly affects employees involved in the development of VR materials for the meta quest headset, as well as affects those working in operations and hardware related roles. While Meta has not officially not confirmed the number of job cuts, a company spokesperson admitted that some teams under Okulus Studios have made “structural changes” which reduced the size of the team.

“Some teams within the Okulus studio are undergoing changes in structure and roles that have influenced the size of the team,” Mata spokesman Tracy Clayton said in an email statement. “These changes are to help our growing audiences to work more efficiently on the experiences of future mixed reality for our growing audiences, while still providing great materials for people today.”

The hits have team members who worked on supernatural, a VR-based fitness application that allows quest users to train with virtual trainers. The app acquired by Meta in a $ 400 million deal was once seen as a major part of the company’s VR fitness ambitions. After the trimming, the team behind the supernatural confirmed that low workout sessions would be released each week.

These job cuts are part of a major trend in meta, which is constantly assuring its priorities in the reality labs unit. Division, while ambitious, has faced increasing pressure to justify its expenses – is still far from the mainstream level with VR adoption. Earlier this year, the company also abolished about 3,600 roles in departments, calling it a demonstration-based decision.

Despite the ongoing changes, Meta says it is still committed to the creation of immersive mixed reality experiences and is planning to continue supporting both fitness and gaming efforts through its search lineup. Displaced employees are allegedly being encouraged to apply for other roles within the company.
