Measles, a disease once almost ended in the US, is now making a strong and worrying comeback.

In 2025, the country has reported more than 1,280 reinforced cases, which is the highest annual number in three decades. Many of these are from states like Texas, where the rate of vaccination has declined significantly.

According to health officials, the increase is largely due to low vaccination, vaccine misinformation and lapse of childhood dosage. Experts are calling it a public health crisis that could have been avoided.

Why is measles back?

In many parts of the US, measles vaccination between school children has fallen below 95 percent safely. In some areas, it is as low as 90 percent. This drop is partially associated with the Kovid -19 epidemic.

Many families regularly recalled childhood vaccines during the lockdown, and never caught. False claims about vaccine security are also spreading widely on social media.

This has increased the state of fear and confusion, especially between the young parents. Global journey is another factor. Since measles spreads very easily, infected passengers can inadvertently trigger outbreaks across the boundaries.

Between January and April 2025, six countries in North and South America reported over 2,300 cases and 3 deaths. The reported during the same period in 2024 is 11 times more than the reported.

In East Asia and Pacific, thousands of cases have been reported, especially in Vietnam and Mongolia.

Measles is a preventive disease. Its return is a warning sign that shows how fear, neglect and false information can undo the progress for decades.
