Kate Winslet, who always speaks candidly to people, did not hold back this time either. She revealed during an interview that she was asked to cover her stomach during a scene in her recent film Lee.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar for their cover story, published Tuesday, the Titanic star recalled the shocking incident, telling the outlet, “In one scene, Lee is sitting on a bench in a bikini … and one of the crew comes in the middle of the shot and says: ‘You should probably sit up straight.'”
Winslet responded, “So you can’t see my tummy bulge? Never!” Winslet added, “That was on purpose, you know?”
The Reader star also revealed that she purposely stopped working out before filming so that her body would appear softer for her role. In response to the outlet’s question about whether she would be bothered if her body appeared “less than perfect,” she said, “On the contrary.” The actress added, “I’m proud of it because it’s my life on my face, and that matters. I don’t see the idea of hiding it.”
During her interview, she also expressed that she feels society is moving in a better direction regarding women’s bodies. Winslet said she was very relieved that women were accepting themselves and refusing to be judgemental.
The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind star said she doesn’t know a single contemporary of hers who grew up watching their mother look in the mirror and say, “I look good!” She shared, “My mom never did that: it was always, ‘Oh my God, I don’t think I can wear this, do I look like a hippie, does my bum look big?'”
Winslet said that a lot of time is wasted being hard on yourself and she will never do that again. The actress has previously spoken openly about facing bullying due to her weight in her childhood and youth.
In 2016, she spoke openly about this to Today. Winslet revealed that she was bullied when she was in school. She recalled that this was because she was “fat” and that some of the other girls were “jealous” of her when she started acting a bit in her teens.
According to Page Six, her weight was one of the major topics in the media when her blockbuster film Titanic was gaining global recognition.
According to the outlet, in 2003, when it wasn’t common for actresses to criticize publications, Winslet took British GQ to task for editing her body to make it look thinner on their February cover. Eventually, they admitted to doing so.
According to the publication, in 2021, the actress revealed that she had instructed Mare of Easttown director Craig Zobel not to edit out her body during an intimate scene.
