Masaba Gupta gets emotional as she shares the painful impact of birth certificate leak
During a recent event, Masaba Gupta revealed how the leak of her birth certificate, which revealed her father’s identity, affected her and her mother Neena Gupta. She described the experience as brutal, reflecting the challenges women face in the public eye.
Designer and actor Masaba Gupta recently spoke at length about the impact of her birth certificate being leaked to the press soon after her birth. During his appearance in we women During the incident, Masaba revealed that the document which had revealed the identity of her father, Vivian Richards, had been stolen from the hospital and published in newspapers to highlight her status as an ‘illegitimate child’. He described this experience as extremely tragic for him and his family.
Speaking at the event, Masaba candidly discussed the moment she learned about the incident and its implications. She said, “When I was born, my birth certificate was leaked to the press. It was stolen from the hospital and leaked to the press. It was on the front page of a newspaper because someone wanted to prove that I was an illegitimate child.”
She became emotional recalling the incident and highlighted its lasting impact on her upbringing.
Reflecting on how she dealt with the condition as a child, Masaba said, “I think I understood it when I was probably 9 or 10. I don’t think I understood it completely, but I had seen versions of it. And I didn’t understand why it was done that way.” He said that the public exposure of such personal information shaped his early experiences and sense of identity.
During the discussion, Masaba addressed the massive impact she had on her mother and veteran actor Neena Gupta, saying, “And I can stay here and feel sad about it, but I don’t know how she (Neena Gupta) did it. There were a lot of challenges at that time, but I think people are very cruel in general and especially to women. The late Mr. Pritish Nandy really did it all. I don’t hold it against him, But I wonder why. I keep questioning why someone would do this.”
Her comments emphasized the challenges faced by single mothers and their children in the public spotlight.
Masaba concluded her comments by saying, “I think this is unacceptable, and I don’t think anyone should have to go through this.”
Neena Gupta was in a relationship with former West Indian Cricketer Vivian Richards in the 1980s. In 1989, she welcomed her daughter Masaba Gupta and raised her as a single mother. Neena later married Vivek Mehra in an intimate ceremony in 2008.
Meanwhile, Masaba got married to Satyadeep Mishra in 2023, and the couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Matara, in October 2024.
