Vishal and director Sundar C’s Madha Gaja Raja releases in theaters on January 12.

Release date: January 12, 2025

Imagine it’s the 2010s. You’re back from school, and you turn on the TV, you flip through the channels and then a comedy clip shows up. You know what movie it’s from, know the dialogue by heart, and still laugh every time you watch it. Now, imagine watching a uniquely beautiful film that is actually known for its comedy 12 years after it was made.

Madha Gaja Raja is the story of Raja (Vishal) who attends a wedding at his school teacher’s house, where he reunites with his school gang. One of his friends (Santhanam) is struggling with marriage problems, while the other two are involved in a case that concerns business tycoon Karakuvel Vishwanath (Sonu Sood).

King is a man who stands up for his friends. Be it his friend’s marriage issue or life and death problems, he is there. He faces an initial shock when he comes across Karakuvel Vishwanath, who has crazy connections with politicians. The rest of the story is about the encounter between Raja and Vishwanath and how he manages to defeat him and help his friends.

Madha Gaja Raja, directed by Sundar C, should be seen through the prism of 2012. Director Sundar C’s films have always entertained fans for decades. The main reason for this is the spontaneous comedy of many comedians, who are a part of his films even today. Madha Gaja Raja is no different. Comedy is its biggest strength. In today’s times it can be seen as regressive and problematic. But, Sundar C’s latest films also face similar problems.

Here is the trailer:

The 2012-film has many nostalgic templates that will take you on a trip down memory lane. From jumping dance songs to a quirky comedy track, Madha Gaja Raja has everything you need that will keep you entertained. It is Santhanam who empowers the film with his comedy. It’s also a reminder of how much he’s been missed as a comedian since becoming a hero.

Madha Gaja Raja is nostalgic not only in terms of its treatment but also because of the cameo roles of late actor-director Manivannan and Manobala. The entire segment featuring Santhanam and Manobala will remind you of Nagesh from Magalir Mattam, which will leave you laughing your head off. However, when Madha Gaja Raja takes itself too seriously, the film falters. The second half, where the audience is forced to watch Raja and Vishwanath face off, drags due to the low stakes.

The heroines in Madha Gaja Raja – Anjali and Varalakshmi Sarathkumar are a treat for men to gawk at. There isn’t much agency in their roles either.

Madha Gaja Raja, though outdated and politically incorrect, manages to bring the much-needed laughs as it reminds you of the good old days when all you needed was a comedy film to relax.

Madha Gaj Raja 2.5 out of 5 stars.
