In short

  • Vairamuthu criticized Tamil filmmakers to use his song lines as a film title without permission.
  • He expressed disappointment on lack of etiquette but did not claim copyright
  • Some NeTsense argued that Tamil words are common property, which question Vairamthu’s claim.

Veteran lyricist Vairamuthu called the Tamil filmmakers and the film industry to use the songs of his songs as the title of the film. In a long post on X, he listed some of his famous songs, which eventually became a film title in Tamil cinema. His post divided the Internet, supporting a portion of people and others were questioning them about using Tamil words, which have been in use since its establishment.

While Vairamuthu did not mention copyright, he questioned the industry to discourage him and did not take permission before using them. He further mentioned that he never asked to use his verses without any permission as it goes against his ideology.

His post written in Tamil has been lax translated, “Tamil cinema has used many of me. Pallavis (Start of song) as the title of the film. None of them sought my permission, nor did they even ask the courtesy – not a single word. ,

He then referred to ‘Ponmai Pozudhu’, ‘Ilaya Neela,’ Orai Therinjiktten ‘,’ Puv Puchuda Via ‘,’ Mauna Ragam, ‘Kannam Kannam Kannam Kolayadithathal’.

Then he said, “I have never scolded anyone to take them without asking them, nor I have questioned them when I have seen them. In a society where wealth cannot become a common property, at least knowledge becomes a normal property – it makes me happy. It is not humble to ask why they used it without my permission.

Responding to Vairamthu’s post, Aadhaar Kannadasana (grandson of mythological poet and lyricist Kannadasana) said he had sought permission to use ‘Pomai Pozudhu’.

“With full respect with Sir, we got your permission for #ponmaAliapozhudhu because U mentioned that this is a special feeling because #kaviyarasukannadasan’s grandchildren are using your songs as a film title. You felt proud. The song was written in the film.

Another section of the people questioned Vairamuthu to claim ownership on these titles. Many reported that the songs have Tamil words existing since the establishment of the Tamil language, and it is not appropriate on them to seek permission from Tamil filmmakers to use the film as the title of the film.

Lyricist Vairamuthu is a famous poet and novelist in the Tamil film industry. They are accused by about 20 women, including singer Chinmai Sripada, who is part of the #MeToo movement as sexual misconduct.
