, November 5: Election Day
– Later in November: It may take several days to know election results, especially if it is close and mail-in ballots are a factor.
, 26 November: Trump, the first sitting or former US president to be convicted of a crime, is to be sentenced in the Manhattan hush money case, where he was accused of falsifying documents to conceal a payment to a porn star to keep her quiet. Was found guilty. Trump has denied wrongdoing and sentencing was originally scheduled for September 18.
, 17th December: The electors, who together make up the Electoral College, meet in their respective states or the District of Columbia to select the President and Vice President.
, 25th December: Electoral votes must be received by the President of the Senate – a role held by the Vice President, currently Harris – and the Archivist to this date.
2025
, 6th January: The Vice President presides over a joint session of Congress counting the Electoral College votes, announcing the results, and announcing who has been elected.
Before the count on January 6, 2021, Trump rebuked his Vice President Mike Pence for refusing to stop Congress from certifying Biden’s victory. That day, the US Capitol was attacked by Trump supporters trying to stop the count. Biden’s victory was certified early the next day.
Congress has since passed the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Reform Act of 2022, which requires the approval of a fifth of the House and Senate to consider challenging state results – much more than before. More often than not, any single MLA in each chamber can mount a challenge.
, 20th January: The election winner and his vice president are inaugurated. At this ceremony, the winner and the Vice President are officially administered the oath of office.
