In short

  • Kourtney Kardashian Barker just launched the Lemme GLP-1 supplement
  • It’s claimed it can increase GLP-1 levels, reduce appetite, and aid weight loss
  • However, experts doubt the connection between the ingredients and the GLP-1 hormone

Out of all the Kardashian sisters, if there is one who is always known for her matcha tea, makeout sessions with her husband and her ‘healthy lifestyle’, it is the eldest sister of this family – Kourtney Kardashian Barker. So, when she launched her lifestyle website, Poosh, in 2019, it was no surprise. And when she ventured into supplements claiming to promote a healthy lifestyle, she felt it was the right fit for her.

However, despite the financial success of his brand, Lemay has faced considerable criticism from experts due to his exaggerated claims about the benefits of the supplements and the fact that his products are not approved by the FDA.

The latest to be subject of criticism is Lemme’s GLP-1 Daily.

‘Natural Ozempic’

Before we tell you about natural Ozempic, let us tell you what Ozempic is and how it actually works.

  • Ozempic is a medication used to help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels and one of its side effects is that it makes people lose weight, making it popular among people wanting to lose weight.
  • It works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which helps the body release insulin when blood sugar levels are high.
  • It also slows down digestion and makes you feel full for longer, so you eat less.
  • Because of this, many people have found it useful for weight management, although it was originally designed for the treatment of diabetes.
  • Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Trulicity are other medications that work similarly to Ozempic and are approved for weight loss.
  • However, Ozempic is the most well-known, thanks to celebs like Elon Musk who have spoken out about its benefits.

Now let’s come back to the GLP-1 hormone, which is the main component of this drug. How does this work? Simply put, the longer it stays in your body, the more satiated you will feel.

So, when Courtney launched her own version of the weight loss supplement, she named it Lemme GLP-1 and people on the internet started calling it the ‘natural Ozempic’.

“Since the launch of Lamay, we’ve heard from thousands of you that you are looking for a natural GLP-1 solution without the side effects. That’s why we created Lamay GLP-1 Daily,” Lamay’s Instagram post says.

What are the potential benefits of Lemmy GLP-1?

Courtney’s Lemay GLP-1 Daily claims to be all natural (Of Duration) and 30 capsules cost Rs 7,500. The list of ingredients is as follows:

  • Eriomin (lemon fruit extract)
  • Supresa (Saffron Extract)
  • Morosil (red-orange fruit extract)

According to Lemme’s website, its GLP-1 supplement:

Boost GLP-1 production, reduce hunger and cravings, promote fat reduction, and support healthy blood sugar levels. It also claims to aid in healthy weight management.

The company recommends taking these supplements twice a day with meals to help you meet your weight management goals.

According to Lemmi: In the first one to two months, it will reduce appetite; by the third month, it will increase GLP-1 levels; and by six months, it will contribute to ‘healthy weight management.’

The company also says that this product has no side effects as it is made entirely of natural products.

But what do the experts say?

india today We analyzed the main ingredients of the supplement and spoke to various experts and they all seemed to agree that while the product may help with weight management in some way, there is no connection between the ingredients and the GLP-1 hormone.

Let us understand the main ingredients one by one.

Eriomin

Dr. Tushar Tayal, Consultant, Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explains that Eriomin is an extract derived from lemon, which works on the regulation of blood sugar.

He points out that a clinical study published by the National Institutes of Health showed that Eriomin may help lower blood sugar levels during fasting and improve insulin sensitivity, which supports the claim that it helps maintain blood sugar levels within the normal range.

“However, direct evidence supporting fat loss and GLP-1 enhancement is lacking,” says Dr. Tayal.

Supresa (Saffron Extract)

Another key ingredient in Lemay GLP-1 is Suppressa, which comes from saffron. Nutritionist and health expert Debjani Gupta says Suppressa is a clinically studied, fast-acting ingredient that can enhance any weight management diet.

“Derived from the flowers of a special variety of Crocus sativus (saffron), Suppressa offers a unique approach to aid weight loss by increasing the neurotransmitter serotonin and reducing the urge to snack between meals,” says Debjani.

However, they also point out that there is no evidence of a link between saffron and increased GLP-1 levels.

Morosil (red orange fruit extract)

Dr. Tayal says Morosil is rich in anthocyanins, which are antioxidants, and some studies suggest that Morosil may aid fat loss and weight management by regulating fat metabolism and possibly reducing the size of fat cells.

Dr. Tayal commented, “Again, there is no strong evidence linking Morosil to an increase in GLP-1 levels.”

final call

Dr Tayal concluded that Courtney’s recently launched dietary supplement may help reduce food cravings and may aid weight loss, but there is no solid evidence that it will help increase the GLP-1 hormone.

Debjani adds that although the individual ingredients in Lemay GLP-1 Daily appear to be safe and are naturally derived, no studies have been done on “the specific combination of the three ingredients.”

He said it could cause some adverse effects, including gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea, gas and bloating.

She adds, “There are no studies or research papers that scientifically validate the product, Lemay GLP-1 Daily is an over-the-counter supplement that lacks the same scientific validation as prescription GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.”

“One should not use any supplements willy-nilly, as there is no data or evidence available about their safety and efficacy or any side effects they may cause,” says Dr Vaishali Naik, endocrinologist at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai.

He further added that it is not known whether this supplement has been extensively studied and whether it is approved by experts or considered safe for use by people.

Dr Naik concludes, “Taking supplements without thinking can lead to irreversible side effects. It is better to be cautious and avoid taking any supplements on your own. Make sure to consult a doctor, who will decide the appropriate treatment plan for you based on your overall health assessment. Weight loss will require adopting a balanced lifestyle, including nutritious diet, exercise and stress management strategies.”
