India’s official entry in the Best Foreign Film category at the 2025 Oscars is Missing Ladies directed by Kiran Rao. The film has garnered widespread attention since its release, and now has the opportunity to compete on a global stage.
Reacting to the news, Kiran Rao expressed her happiness and surprise at the nomination. “I am very happy. I did not expect to get an Oscar entry as there have been so many good films made this year. Now we will have a chance to showcase this film to a much larger audience. I would like to thank the audience for giving this film so much love. I think this film has something for everyone,” Rao told India Today Digital.

She also mentioned her conversation with actor and ex-husband Aamir Khan and said, “I spoke to him and he congratulated us.”
Earlier in a statement, Rao had described the audience’s support as a source of inspiration for the filmmakers. He said, “To the audience, your love and support mean a lot to us, and it is your belief in this film that inspires us to push creative boundaries as filmmakers. Missing Ladies will now represent India at the prestigious Academy Awards, where it will compete for the coveted Best Foreign Film title.
