Jalianwala Bagh massacre remains one of the biggest tragic events in India’s struggle for freedom. Every year, April 13 is not celebrated only as Baisakhi, but it also reminds the country of the spine-chilling event carrying the lives of many unarmed and innocent Indians in 1919. While we pay tribute to the lost life in the massacre, we also bend to those who revolted against the British and for cold works.
One of them was Chettur Shankaran Nair, who was in a state of power at that time and worked closely with the British government. There are some unknown facts about Malayali barrister here who chose to fight for their people despite being in close quarters with the British.
- Knowing about the bloodshed and open firing on its people in Amritsar by the British Indian Army, Chettur Shankaran Nair immediately resigned from his respected post in the Viceroy’s Executive Council.
- In 1922, he laid down his formal education for good use and wrote a book called Gandhi and Anarki, which attributed the British and Michael O’Dwir to peacefully protest against the Raulut Act at Jarwalwala Bagh.
- Soon after, the then Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Divar, took him to the bench court of the London, alleging defamation.
- O’Dwyer v. The Nair case was one of the longest civil hearing in the legal history. But he did not give up and decided to fight the case in a court room filled with British led by English judges.
- The reputed Indian lawyer, who also served as a judge of the Madras High Court, was found guilty and asked him to pay a fine of 500 pounds as he refused to apologize for his words.
Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jalianwala Bagh, Akshay Kumar in the court room drama titled, Akshay Kumar has played the role of Sachy Patriot, Chettur Shankaran Nair. The film Book, The Case The Hawk The Empire: One Mange is inspired by the Fight for the Truth, written by Nair’s great-grandson Raghu Palat and his wife Pushpa Palat.
Apart from Kumar, Kesari chapter 2 also stars R Madhavan and Ananya Pandey. The film will hit theaters on April 18, 2025, starring Karan Singh Tyagi and co-produced by Karan Johar.
