If there’s one thing Karan Johar has never been shy about, it’s honesty, especially when it comes wrapped up in favor of self-deprecating humor and fashion confessions. In a recent rapid-fire round, the filmmaker-producer opened up about everything from his enduring love for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s cinematic aesthetics to his biggest style regrets, questionable purchases and a refreshingly candid stance on personal fashion.

in a frank conversation with Hollywood Reporter IndiaWhen the director was asked about his last film, which made him “good” only because of the costumes, Karan didn’t hesitate. For him, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is unmatched. Describing Bhansali as one of the most aesthetic voices of Indian cinema, Johar said that the filmmaker’s every film stands out because of its costumes, reaffirming his long-standing admiration for Bhansali’s visual richness.

Karan said, “It’s always what Bansali does. The costumes in every film of his are excellent. He’s a filmmaker who I really consider to have one of the most aesthetic voices.”

But when the conversation turned personal, the statements became even more juicy. Talking about purchasing regrets, Karan admitted that his obsession with watches in the early 2000s was completely misplaced. “I don’t even wear watches,” he said, adding that he regretted buying them.

He also revealed spending money on an artist’s painting, which has lost its value after the artist went to jail. When he later asked a friend of Saffron Art what the artwork was worth, the answer was brutally honest: nothing.

After this, there were fashion regrets and Karan immediately presented an unforgettable look. For his 50th birthday, he wore a green, glittery Dolce & Gabbana sequin jacket – a choice he now looks back on with horror. Comparing himself to a disco ball, Johar laughed and said that he didn’t know what he was thinking at that time.

“For my 50th, I wore this green, glittery sequin Dolce & Gabbana jacket. I swear I looked like a disco ball in that. Now when I look at the pictures I regret it. I’m like, What was I thinking? I look crazy. I wanted to wear something shiny, and I think there was a glam theme or something. I don’t even remember, but looking back, And I feel like I wasn’t pulling and then of course 10,000 others look like they’ve fallen flat,” he added.

Unfiltered, funny and undoubtedly rapid-fire, Karan Johar’s take offered a glimpse of a man who understands fashion deeply, but no longer takes himself too seriously.
