Karan Johar was isolated as a child to be a very woman: not enough boy

Director Karan Johar recently opened his struggle with approval among children of his age group. He remembered how he was often not included in the sports teams to be ‘very female’.
Karan, in an interview Jai ShettyOn my YouTube channel said, “I was told that I was, you know, more feminine than I should be. I went differently. I ran away differently. I spoke differently. My choice in life, my hobbies were different in life.”
He further said, “So whenever I went down, you know that we lived like apartment blocks, and when you went down, it was that all the children in the apartment block would come down and play in the evening, and I wanted.”
“I wanted to be a part of the football team. I wanted to play cricket with boys. But nobody chose me because I was not very good. You know, I was not enough sporty. I was not enough boy or was not enough man. So when you ask me what I wanted to be, the first thing in that age was that I wanted me to ‘wanted Rocky and Rani’s direction.
“My first part of my formal years, my teenage, was just related. And no one told me that you have your own person. You can be your own person. This guidance, that nutrition, life’s philosophy of life was not given to me at that time. Back to the same school.
Karan is the son of late creator Yash Johar and Dharma Productions Co-producer Hiru Yash Johar.
The director-producer recently supported ‘Dadhad 2’ with Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptty Dimri. The film directed by Shazia Iqbal is scheduled to release on August 1, 2025.
