As Karan Arjun celebrates its 30th anniversary, director Rakesh Roshan is preparing to bring the film back to the theatres. In a recent interview, Roshan revealed how Shah Rukh Khan initially walked out of the project, following which Aamir Khan had to replace him. Later, Shahrukh returned expressing his desire to work with Roshan as he was the first person to sign him as an actor in King Uncle. Additionally, Ajay Devgan was initially a part of the film but he also left the film, prompting Salman Khan to join the cast.
In an interview with Screen, Rakesh Roshan revealed that, apart from him and his dialogue writer, no one had confidence in the project. He recalled that when he first announced Karan Arjun, two distributors pulled out of the film because it featured two romantic heroes, neither of whom had prior experience in action roles.
Roshan explained that although people were initially skeptical of the film, they had faith in him and when it was released the audience eventually accepted it.
Discussing the reasons behind Ajay Devgan and Shah Rukh Khan’s separation from Karan Arjun, the Krrish director said that only Ajay can tell why he left the film.
He also mentioned that Shah Rukh had initially given up on the role he intended for Ajay, while Ajay wanted to switch roles with Shah Rukh in an attempt to change his image.
However, Roshan made it clear that he was not making the film to change their images, but because the story required him to portray the characters as originally written.
He revealed that after both Khan and Devgan left the film, he cast Aamir Khan and Salman Khan in their place. He further revealed that later, Shah Rukh returned and expressed his desire to work with him, adding that Roshan was the first person to sign him as an actor in King Uncle.
The young actor mentioned that despite not believing in the story, he could not sleep at night and felt strongly about working with Roshan. Roshan then informs Aamir that he has dates with Shahrukh for the next month, and Aamir agrees to start them with Shahrukh.
Karan Arjun is all set for a theatrical re-release on November 22, 2024.
